Robert Burns January 2017

Learning intentions for Robert Burns topic.

Overview.  We will look at Robert Burns and his poetry in a holistic way.  We will consider his place in Scotland’s history and what he means to the wider world.

Art.  Watercolour paintings of scenes from Burns poems.  Create invitations, placemats and decorations for our Burns supper.  Painting on glass to create a stained glass window effect.  Look at and discuss the ways other people have celebrated Robert Burns in art.

Cooking.  Host a Burns supper.  Plan and shop for a menu.  Visit the butcher and find out about haggis.   Discover what people in Edinburgh were eating during the period Burns lived there.

Exploration.  We will take three day trips.
·         The Burns birthplace museum Alloway and Alloway Auld Kirk.
·         The Scottish storytelling centre followed by St Giles cathedral to see the stained glass window celebrating Robert Burns life and work.
·         The writers museum Edinburgh.

Literacy.  Iona will learn three verses from “The twa dogs” and copy them out.  She will perform her poem at our Burns supper.  We will practice reading some Burns poems and listen to recordings of other people’s interpretations both set to music and read.  Iona will create a glossary of Scots words used in our poem.

Evidence.  We will create a Fast Fact book listing important dates and interesting facts about Robert Burns.  Our topic book will be filled in with pictures, photographs and written work.
